Gennaro Cimmino trained with Nirvana Paparo, Marianna Troise, Elsa Piperno, Joseph Fontano, Roberta Escamilla Garrison, and other leading Italian and international teachers. In the early 1980s, he met Maurice Béjart, who encouraged him to pursue choreography. Inspired by the concept of Total Theatre developed by the artistic avant-gardes of the time, he expanded his practice through the study of actor training methods, including those of Stanislavski and Grotowski. He also worked as an actor for RAI in radio dramas alongside Licia Maglietta, Toni Servillo, and other renowned performers, while attending directing courses led by Pino Simonelli at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples.

In 2003, he devoted himself entirely to dance and the performing arts by founding Körper. Over the past fifteen years, he has focused on supporting and producing the work of emerging choreographers from the Campania region, including Francesco Nappa, Francesco Colaleo, Luna Cenere, Gennaro Maione, Giovanfrancesco Giannini, Nicolas Grimaldi Capitello, Sara Lupoli, Adriano Bolognino, and many others.

In recent years, Cimmino has returned to choreography with two major works. Aesthetica – Exercise No. 1 received an award in New York, while Vivianesque premiered on 3–4 November 2018 at Teatro Bellini in Naples to widespread critical acclaim and enthusiastic public response. From 5 to 16 December 2018, he curated Korperformer at Sala Assoli, a programme dedicated to new languages and practices in contemporary performance.

As part of the exhibition Coreografie per una mostra (Choreographies for an Exhibition), presented alongside the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition at the Fondazione Donnaregina / Museo MADRE, Cimmino coordinated all the performances staged between December 2018 and March 2019, collaborating with choreographers Olivier Dubois, Matteo Levaggi, and Luna Cenere. Together with artist Franco Silvestro, he also created Dennis with Flowers, a performance paying tribute to the celebrated photographer and presented as the closing event of the Mapplethorpe exhibition. The work was subsequently awarded First Prize in the Performance category at the Arte Laguna Prize.

He completed the Aesthetica diptych with the premiere of Aesthetica – Exercise No. 2, presented at Teatro Piccolo Bellini on 3–5 December 2021, followed by additional performances at Sala Assoli on 18–19 December 2021.

Cimmino’s artistic research continues through an exploration of the concept of Neapolitan identity (Napoletanità), while developing a new work dedicated to Giuseppe Patroni Griffi. In January 2022, he began a three-year collaboration (2022–2024) with the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN), creating and presenting a series of new site-specific dance performances within the museum spaces.
