Your Body Is a Battleground, inspired by Barbara Kruger’s iconic positive/negative image created for the 1989 Women’s March in Washington, D.C.—a landmark demonstration in support of women’s right to bodily autonomy and access to abortion in the United States—explores individual consciousness and our collective understanding of social roles today.
The female body, long regarded as a symbol of fertility and seduction, has also been one of the primary subjects of economic, political, and social instrumentalization.
Who decides what a woman should or should not do? Who decides what she should or should not be? What defines the feminine ideal today? More broadly, what are the models and ideals that shape our understanding of what it means to be human?
